The available engine of the Ford Flex is connected to an automatic six-speed transmission available with paddle-shifters. The standard base V6 engine at 3.5-liter can generate 254 lb-ft torque and 287-horsepower.

Fuel economy rated by the EPA for this base engine on 2-wheel drive is at 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway. On all-wheel drive the base engine is EPA-rated at 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway. The Limited trim of the Ford Flex turbocharged with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-engine is rated at 350 lb-ft torque and 365 horsepower with an EPA rate of 16/23 MPG city/highway.

The 2014 Ford Escape has three available trims – S, SE and Titanium. Standard interior features include air-conditioning, power accessories, cruise control, and tilt-telescoping steering wheel. Electronic features include Sync, Bluetooth connectivity, a 6-speaker audio system w/ CD player, auxiliary audio jack and USB/iPod interface.    The higher trims add more features like keyless entry w/ keypad, adjustable power driver seat, dual-zone climate control, heated mirrors, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Additional electronics include an 8” touchscreen with MyFord Touch, a navigation system, and a 10-speaker Sony audio system w/ satellite radio.

The powertrain depends on the trim. The base 2.5L engine produces 168hp, 167 lbs. of torque, with a fuel rating of 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway. The SE and Titanium trims have a turbocharged 1.6L engine that produces 178hp, 184 lbs. of torque, with a fuel rating of 23 mpg city/33 mpg highway. An optional turbocharged 2.0L for the SE and Titanium is available which is capable of 240hp, 270 lbs. of torque, with a fuel rating of 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway.

The 2014 Ford Escape got good ratings in safety/crash tests, getting good scores for frontal/side impact protection and also in the roof strength test. Safety features available on all trims include front side airbags, full length curtain airbags, and a driver knee airbag. It has antilock disc brakes, an integrated blind-spot mirror, stability/traction control and Ford MyKey for setting a speed and volume limit. Rear parking sensors are optional on all trims except in the Titanium where it is standard. Another optional safety feature is a blind-spot warning system with cross-traffic alert.

The 2014 has a price range of $23,100-$29,100 depending on the trim. The Titanium trim has a lower price compared to earlier models, which is definitely welcome to SUV lovers.  Driving tests show the Escape is pretty capable, capable of pretty steep climbs while still remaining relatively quiet inside.
